THE LAW on Private Hire licensing is changing this month (January 08) which will mean a wide range of vehicle operators throughout the country must get their licence up to date if they want to continue to operate.
Those most likely to be affected are operators of airport travel, chauffeur services, courtesy cars, executive hire, hospital cars, novelty vehicles, park and ride – including airport parking, pub mini buses, school contracts, stretched limousines, works contracts and volunteer driving. This includes any vehicle of nine or fewer seats used to convey passengers for hire, reward or profit. For vehicles built to carry more than nine passengers there is separate legislation.
The alterations come under the Road Safety Act 2006 which changes the law on Private Hire licensing, with the repeal of Section 75 of the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1976.
The date for the introduction of the changes is January 28, 2008 and all affected must have the appropriate licences by that date if they wish to continue to operate.
